Kadhi is a hot yogurt based soup that is traditionally mixed with khichadi.

Add the cinnamon, mustard seeds and jeera.

Kadhi khichdi step by step

  1. For making kadhi, heat oil and temper it adding cumin seeds, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds and curry leaves. Saute for a while until they splutter together. Add onions and saute well..

  2. Prepare masala for kadhi. Add ginger garlic paste, salt, turmeric and Coriander powder. Add some water and cook well..

  3. Take curd and besan/ gram flour and mix well with hand whisk. When the oil separates from masalas….

  4. Add curd and besan mixture to it. Add enough water and let it get 1 or 2 boils. Kadhi is ready..

  5. Heat some oil and add cumin seeds, cinnamon, clove and cardamom. Saute for a while and add sliced onions. Saute for a minute. Add green chillies, salt, ginger garlic paste, turmeric and Coriander powder. Add water and cook well until oil floats on the surface..

  6. Wash khichdi (rice and green moong daal) and add to masala. Add enough water and let it boil. Cover the lid of pressure cooker and let cook on high flame until 1 whistle. Then cook on low flame for 5 to 7 minutes. When the pressure releases open the lid..

  7. Serve with kadhi and papad..

The first time I made this recipe, hubby was a little skeptical about the turmeric and cilantro, but I followed the recipe as written.

Amaranth flour is added here instead of besan (gram flour) which we use in regular kadhis.
