How to Make Yummy Pholourie Delicious, fresh and tasty.

Pholourie. Pholourie (Pronunciation), also spelled phulourie or phoulourie, is a snack food commonly eaten in Trinidad and Tobago and also known in Guyana and Suriname. It consists of fried, spiced dough balls that are served with a chutney. The dough is made up of flour, ground split peas, water, and spices.

Slightly Crispy on the outside, yet some what light and fluffy on the inside.

This Incredible flavorful street snack is enjoyed throughout the Caribbean Island especially in Trinidad, and Guyana.

And I think pholourie (sometimes also spelt as polourie or phulourie) is the ideal recovery food.

Ingredients of Pholourie

  1. Prepare 1 lb of flour.

  2. You need 1/2 tsp of saffron.

  3. You need 1 tsp of yeast.

  4. You need 1 tsp of salt.

  5. You need 1/2 tsp of baking powder.

  6. It’s 11/2 tsp of brown sugar.

  7. Prepare 10 of culantro (chadon beni) leaves.

  8. Prepare 5 of small garlic cloves.

  9. It’s 1 of small hot pepper.

  10. Prepare of About 2 cups warm water.

  11. Prepare of Oil for frying.

This is a very popular snack not just in TnT (Trinidad and Tobago) but also in Guyana and Suriname.

Pholourie is a fritter made from a split pea batter that has been seasoned with different spices and hot pepper.

Dollops of the thick batter is dropped into hot oil, and shallow-fried until golden brown.

Pholourie step by step

  1. Combine first six ingredients in a large mixing bowl..

  2. In a blender or food processor, mince culantro leaves, garlic and hot pepper in some of the warm water..

  3. Gradually add this mixture to the dry ingredients while vigorously mixing with a fork..

  4. Continue to add remaining warm water and mixing until a smooth batter is formed. (Tip: you can use the water to "rinse" the emptied processor or blender to ensure you get as much seasoning in the mixture).

  5. Cover with damp paper towels or kitchen towels and let rest for one to two hours, until more than doubled in size..

  6. Heat oil in large, heavy bottomed pot over medium heat until hot but not smoking..

  7. Use half tablespoon or tablespoon (depending on what size you want your pholourie balls to be) and scoop batter into the pot.
