Hilsa Fish in Mustard Gravy is an old traditional fish recipe that is very much popular in Bengal.

Well one can use any other fish as well to make this recip.

Hilsa fish is commonly known as 'Ilish maachh' in Bengal.

You can have Hilsa fish in mustard gravy using 9 ingredients and 8 steps. Here is how you cook it.

  1. It’s 700 gms of Hilsa fish -.

  2. Prepare 4 tbsp of Mustard oil -.

  3. Prepare 1/4 tsp of Kalongi -.

  4. Prepare 8-10 of Green chillies -.

  5. You need 3 tbsp of Yellow mustard seeds -.

  6. Prepare 1 tbsp of Red mustard seeds -.

  7. You need 1 cup of Coconut milk -.

  8. You need 1 tsp of Haldi -.

  9. You need to taste of Salt.

Hilsa fish in mustard gravy step by step

  1. Marinate the fish pieces with salt and haldi. Keep it aside for 10 min..

  2. Preparing mustard paste : in mixer we make a fine paste of red mustard seeds, Yellow mustard seed, Salt and 4 - 5 green chillies.

  3. Heat mustard oil in a Kadai till the oil changes its colour..

  4. Temper hot oil with kalonji and cook in medium flame till oil comes from the mixture..

  5. Pour mustard paste, haldi, green chillies and 1/2 cup coconut milk to the mixture and boil it in medium flame..

  6. Now add fish pieces slowly to the mixture and cook it on low flame for at least 10 min..

  7. Then add 1 tbsp of raw mustard oil over the gravy and bring it to boil..

  8. Hilda fish is ready to serve with steamed rice.

A dish that goes very well as lunch and dinner and with plain rice.

Marinate fish with salt and turmeric powder for.

Gravy should be little runny not too thick.

Turn sides of the fish pieces so that both sides get cooked.

Once you are happy with the consistency of the gravy turn the flame off.
